Middle School Community Service
Community Service Guidelines and Procedures
- In each of his/her Middle School years, a St. Andrew’s student is encouraged to complete 15 hours of service to the school and community. At least 5 of these hours must be service to the community earned by students outside of school-sponsored activities. If these guidelines are met, the student will be recognized as graduating with distinction. In addition to earning distinction, students will be recognized for going above and beyond the recommended 15 hours per year. Students will receive recognition for completing community service at the following levels during the course of their time in the Middle School:
Level I: Between 31-50 hours
Level II: Between 51- 100 hours
Level III: More than 100 hours
- If students do not complete 15 hours in the 7th grade, they can make up the hours in the 8th grade at 2x the hours lacked at the end of the 7th grade year.
For example: If a student received 9 hours in the 7th grade (lacking 6), in the 8th grade he/she must complete 15 + (6 x 2) = 27 hours.
- CS Cards: In order to receive credit for service, a student must fill out a Community Service Card and return it to the Community Service Box within two weeks of the activity. The sponsoring adult/faculty member must sign the card, and a few sentences on the back (or on an attached sheet of paper) should describe what was done and what was learned from the activity.
- 7th Grade Carry-over: If a student has more than 15 hours in the 7th grade, he/she may carry over up to 7.5 hours into the 8th grade.
- Summer Carry-over: If a student has completed community service work over the summer, he/she may receive up to 5 hours of credit for the following year. A CS Card must be filled out and turned in by October 9th.
- Permission Slips: Every off campus Community Service activity that is sponsored by SAS requires parent permission. Several days prior to the event, permission forms will be provided at the Middle School Office window and online. These forms must be signed and returned, and the first students to turn in forms will be signed up to attend the event. There are a limited number of spots for each activity, so the first to turn in forms will be posted on a list on the Community Service Bulletin Board.
Do you work with or know about an event or organization that could use Middle School volunteers?
We are always looking to expand our program and involve members of the SAS community more closely. Please contact Laura Milton (lmilton@sasaustin.org) if you would either like to help lead a community service trip or would simply like to pass on an opportunity.
